Releasing your stresses at a Sento in Tokyo

There are many recommendable hot springs found in Japan, but you can also enjoy having great bath experiences without traveling out of Tokyo city. Tokyo has a lot of great “Sento”, which is a communal bathhouse open to the public, where all entrance fees are settled at the price of 470 yen. Here, let me share with you various types of Sento, where you can relax and release all your stresses.

“Daikokuyu”, Oshiage

Only 10 minutes walk from the towering Sky tree, Daikokuyu is a famous Sento in Tokyo, loved from its neighbors for over 70 years.  After relaxing in the open-air bath, you will be able to cool down your body on a hammock placed at the resting area. The sento offers a daily changing herbal bath, such as Ginger, peach, and even watermelon during the summer season.

“Kaiseiyu”, Kamata

What makes Kaiseiyu unique is that they have a small aquarium of Goldfish located right next to the bathtub. This allows you to enjoy watching the goldfish while soaking in the bath. As Kamata is famous for having amazing gyozas (dumplings), go fill out your stomach with a plate of gyoza and beer after getting all relaxed and cozy.

“Shimizuyu”, Musashi Koyama

At Shimizuyu, take turns trying the 2 different types of natural hot springs: the indoor “Kuro-yu” (Black Hot Spring) and the outdoor “Ougon-yu” (Golden Hot Spring). The minerals in these hot springs will function differently to smooth your skin and stabilize your mental health, which is why this Sento is said to deliver you inner and outer beauty.

“Hisamatsuyu”, Sakuradai

At arrival, you will be surprised by the modern design of Hisamatsuyu, which differentiates it from the orthodox styled Sentos. As renovated in 2014, this sento won the Good Design Award for its stylishness, replacing the traditional wall art of Sento with a projection map. The natural hot spring and massages (optional with additional cost) will comfort your body and mind.

The eccentric wall art with vivid colors and eye-catching design will make you feel as if you are in a museum while taking a bath. The great part of this sento is that it is open for 22 hours (12 PM-10 AM / Last Entrance 9 AM), with a fulfilling relaxation area with over 6000 comic books. You can literally spend all day in this facility, separating your mind from the outside world.
